Oxclose School is a successful Community Comprehensive School with extensive out of school hours used by students and adults and is the only secondary 3* facility for disability inclusion in the city.

Facilities and building condition are good. However, in order to meet the needs of a transformational 21st Century curriculum, greater access to multimedia resource based learning centres is being provided within the school.

Oxclose School is Sunderland’s ‘Quick Win’ project and currently under contract with a planned completion of April 2007. Plans for this school include refurbishment of all curriculum areas. Additionally the school main entrance will be enhanced to make it more welcoming and less congested. Dining room will also be extended to create much needed social space. Additional circulation and social space will be provided by extension into existing courtyard areas. The main feature of this project is an extension to the school’s performing arts provision to support its Performing Arts College status.

Outside view of Oxclose schoolThe school is a specialist college for Visual and Performing Arts and recognises that active arts based activities can enhance teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum. We also have an extensive youth and community programme involving the Oxclose and District Young People’s Project, a variety of dance groups and a music collective whose work will be further developed through specialist college status for the benefit of our partner schools and the local community

Oxclose is one of the first BSF schools in the country to open. The presence of Tim Byles from Partnerships for Schools, who administer BSF for the government, underlined the significance of this event.

Around £11 million has been spent on the major refurbishment of Oxclose. A specialist visual and performing arts college, its provision for dance, drama and music has been significantly enhanced. Diverse personalised learning opportunities are now possible in its new Learning Resource Centre at the heart of the school.

State of the art ICT facilities exist throughout the school. Together with enhanced social and dining spaces, flexible learning areas and a fantastic new entrance, the pupils and staff were able to express their delight to the Minister as he toured the school and saw the transformation for himself.

On the same day, the Mayor led an evening celebration at the school, attended by 100 invited guests associated with the school, local community and partnerships across the City and the region. Following speeches, the school was available for guests to explore, talk to staff and pupils, admire their work … and join in some of the activities.

Oxclose will be the first of many new schools to open as part of the BSF /Academies programme, for which significant progress is now being made.
