Colliery Lamp Cabinlamp

A procession of colliery banners, led by a brass band will march to Beamish Museum on the 28th of March at noon to help open the museum's latest exhibit of a Colliery Lamp Cabin. Every miner who arrives at the Museum on the day with a full-size safety lamp (working or not) will receive free admission.

Beamish holds a nationally important collection of safety lamps and of mine's safety and rescue equipment. Little of this equipment has been on display to visitors as it requires carefully-controlled environmental conditions. The Lamp Cabin allows Beamish to portray some of the heroic work undertaken by generations of mines' rescue workers, alongside some of the tools used by miners, ranging from wooden tools of the 18th and early 19th centuries up to the late 20th century pneumatic picks and tool kits.

Free loan equipment

Are you a Voluntary or Community sector organisation based or working in Sunderland who needs free IT equipment on a short term basis, maybe for training purposes, short courses etc? Are you aware you can loan a book from a library, a CD and DVD's but did you know you can loan a laptop, a projector, try out a Wii, capture stuff on a high def video camera or perhaps try out a new more accessible keyboards?

Other than the normal laptops and projectors needed for meetings and the such there is also some very unusual kit. E-voting, Nintendo Wii's and video/camera stuff to name a few, not to mention the PC accessibility equipment and knowledge.

The aim of the project is to provide short term kit which groups/projects would otherwise not have access to for what ever reason in an effort to extend their use of ICT and increase their capacity. Something ICT can easily achieve.

College Tumbles on Track

Biddick Sports College has received £14,000 from Sunderland City Council to buy a new carbon fibre tumble track to help the club host annual team tumbling competitions, and will provide more opportunities for the gymnasts to brush up on their skills. This will raise the profile of the sports in the Washington area.

Biddick Sports Community Gymnastics Club provides acrobatic and tumble training from age groups ranging from infants to young adults.

Councillor Peter Walker, chairman of the Washington area committee, said: "Biddick Sports College has always been very active in the community and Washington is extremely proud of the club.

"This is a great project which is very popular and what better way to celebrate this than by providing the funding for a new track which will help to showcase the club's talent."

Lynn Hope, head coach at the college, said: "We're delighted that the Washington area committee has granted us the SIB (strategic initiatives budget) money to purchase the new track. "At present, our members practice on an inflatable track which is not ideal and can put a lot of strain on wrists and ankles. The new track will enable our club members to compete on a level playing field and improve their tumbling skills. "We look forward to seeing a rapid improvement in our member’s performance, which will hopefully boost our national ratings."

Lynn said: "This year the club has had five tumblers who have been awarded a place in the British national gymnastic finals, which is a phenomenal achievement and the new track will hopefully see other gymnasts qualifying to the finals."

dcsfProposed Play & Urban Games Facilities for Washington

Sunderland City Council successfully applied to the Department for Children, Schools and Families for Play Pathfinder Status and we are one of only 20 councils in the country to secure the £2.1 million Government grant.

Play Pathfinder is a special award to authorities who have excelled in improving play, and challenges us to strive further. The funding will go towards 28 new or updated play areas across Sunderland and one City Adventure Centre. Such investment into play is unprecedented in the City. Further information is available on The Children's Plan - Play Pathfinder or by visiting Department for Children, Schools and Families website.

Pathfinder funding accelerates our progress against the agreed Play & Urban Games Strategy (Moving Forward 2007-2012). Pathfinder will therefore enable significant progress in Washington.

Improvements include:-

Development of a sub-area site in Albany Park
Full refurbishment of play provision in Glebe Park in line with the Glebe renewal plan
Development of a teenage multi use games area in Sulgrave
An area Wheeled Sports Park
This is in addition to new developments at Barmston Village, Rickleton Park and upgrades at Swirral Edge, Hexham and Simonburn.

Wheeled Sports Park

Proposals had been developed for the area Wheeled Sports Park working with young people. Children and young people from across Washington were involved in identifying the location and design of the Washington wheeled sport provision. Consideration was given to a number of sites. Many factors were considered including access by public transport, land ownership, land topography and sub-structure, visibility and informal oversight.

Sites initially considered were Princess Anne Park, Albany Park, Glebe Park - Pitstop and Holley Park. During consultation, additional sites were also identified by Councillors and young people which included Glebe Park – near to equipped area, Rickleton and North East Oxclose.

After considering the range of issues. Young People's preferred site was at Glebe Park, near to the current equipped area. This was largely because of perceived safety and viewed as accessible for all. The proposal has met resistance from some local residents. This was responded to by an extended consultation process.

Following extended consultation, some residents locally still felt other sites are more suitable. On 4 February 2009 at Area Committee, the decision was made to give further consideration and analysis of potential locations across Washington. This will be undertaken through a consultation process with young people, residents and elected Members.

The project has been transferred from Year 1 of the Pathfinder Programme to Year 2 following liaison with Play England. The new consultation process must now take place within a timescale that ensures the project remains eligible for Year 2 Play Pathfinder funding, which requires the facilities to be built before March 2010.

Further updates will be provided via the local media and City Council website. The updates will detail arrangements for the next phase of consultation, where you can nominate additional possible locations for the wheeled sports park.

Further information is available on the discussions to date in the Information Sheets below:-

pccSunderland, Washington & Coalfields Parent & Carer Council. (PCC)

The PCC was set up late 2007, after the annual Parent Carer Forum after parents were inspired at a workshop by Katie Clark from the Calderdale Parent Carer Council. The held their first meeting in November that year, and are going from strength to strength. In 2008, they were asked to chair the annual Parent Carer Forum.

The group is entirely ran by parent carers - all volunteering their time. They are working in close partnership with many professionals throughout Sunderland, and have taken part in many a consultation. Many of the parents now also sit on various planning/strategic boards and steering groups. We hope in the future to be central point for parent carers, and be able to direct parents to condition specific support groups as well.

In summer 2008, the PCC received lottery funding of just under £3000 to help with set-up and running costs. The Co-Op also donated £100 to purchase supplies for a series of coffee mornings that they held in November 2008.

Some of the aims of the PCC are
1)To provide support and information to parents and carers of children and young people with special educational/additional needs, and/or a disability.
2)To listen to the views of the families, children and young people, and work with them to enhance, and make a difference to, their lives.
3)To promote good working relationships, communications, involvement and transparency between themselves and the families, children and young people.
4)To involve, where practical, the families, children and young people in the workforce development.

We try and meet every month, to discuss what's happened over the last month, and what our next steps are. Everyone is welcome at these meetings (details below), and we often have service providers popping in, including Steve Fletcher(Children's Services) Linda King (youth Development Worker) and Cllr Pat Smith has also been along.

The PCC works very closely with Sunderland Carers Centre, and we are working together on employing a Parent Participation worker.
