With help from a Community Worker they worked together to put in a bid to the European Social Fund to set up a project in Washington that could provide education and training for local women, which incorporated quality childcare to enable them to gain qualifications. After months of searching for a building, Sulgrave Hall was found and the first Confidence Building Course for Women started. Once the women completed this course, they wanted to go further, so links with the City of Sunderland College were made and the range of courses expanded to Motor Vehicle Repair, Electrics, Woodwork, Welding and many more. Since then the Project has grown into a dynamic voluntary organisation, run by women for women. We now have charitable status and are a Limited Company. | links | click here to view bridges page | | Group: | COLUMBIA COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION | Contact | Mrs J Nichols | Address | Oxclose Road, Columbia, Washington | Tel no: | 0191 4168032 | | Group: | COLUMBIA GRANGE SCHOOL | Contact | Mrs K Elliott | Address | Oxclose Road, Washington, NE38 7NY | Tel no: | 0191 2193860 | Fax No: | 2193865 | Email | columbia.grange@schools.sunderland.gov.uk | Website |

It is from here that the family took their surname of 'Washington'. There are displays on George Washington, and the recent history of the Hall. There is also a fine collection of oil paintings, delftware and heavily carved oak furniture, giving an authentic impression of gentry life following the turbulence of the English Civil War.
