However, we realised there was a gap in our provision and that the needs of women under 18 were not being met. As a result of this realisation the 'Bridging Out' programme has been set up. Bridging Out is a responsive programme aimed at 2 specific target groups - young women aged 13 - 19 years who are excluded from education, training or employment and young mothers. The Bridging Out programme is aimed at empowering young women, increasing confidence, self-esteem and personal effectiveness by raising aspirations. The programme is funded by the Neighbourhood Support Fund and the City of Sunderland College and has five strands to it.

The earliest section was designed by George Stephenson and opened on 17 January 1826, making it one of the world's first modern railways. It was 15 miles long when completed in 1855. Each end was locomotive worked; the six mile middle section consisting of rope worked inclines with very steep gradients. At its peak, the Railway handled over 1 million tons of coal per year and remained virtually intact until 1968. Between 1968 and 1974, most of the line was closed until only the last 3.5 miles between Monkton and Jarrow staithes were operated by the National Coal Board. However, the original 1826 section between the Black Fell bank head and Springwell bank head was acquired for preservation in 1976 by Tyne and Wear County Council. | | Group: | DONWELL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION | Contact | Mrs R Charlton | Address | Wellgarth Road, Donwell Village, Washington, NE37 1EB | Tel no: | 0191 4171262 | | Group: | SPRINGWELL VILLAGE HALL & SPRINGWELL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION | Contact | Suzanne Shaftoe | Address | Fell Road, Springwell Village | Tel no: | 0191 4162630 CA | | Group: | SPRINGWELL VILLAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY | Contact | Mr P J McCarron | Address | Westfield Crescent, Gateshead, SR5 2HD | Tel no: | 0191 2193790 | Fax No: | 2193793 | Email | springwell.village.primary@schools.sunderland.gov.uk | | Group: | | Contact | | Address | | Tel no: | | Fax No: | | Email | | Website | | Information |
